Where to stay in Pereira – A guide to the capital of Risaralda

Pereira is the capital of the Risaralda department, the most important city of the Colombian coffee axis and the second largest city of the Paisa region, after Medellin.

This city is located in western Colombia, in the valley of the Otún River in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes.

Founded officially in 1863, the Otún valley had been inhabited since pre-Hispanic times by groups of the Quimbaya and Pijao cultures.

In contrast to most other large Colombian cities, and due to its rather recent foundation, Pereira lacks a colonial legacy.

Pereira’s main attractions revolve around the coffee industry and the nature of the region.

Pereira is a important starting point for numerous tours to the coffee axis and places like Quindío, Salento or Valle de Cocora.

The main tourist attractions of the city are the Ukumarí Biopark, Plaza de Bolívar (Bolivar Square), Uribe Uribe Lake Park, Olaya Herrera Park and the lively area around Circunvalar.

The climate of Pereira is generally pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 11ºC and 25ºC. Pereira has two rainy seasons, one between March and May, and another between September and November.

The urban transport in Pereira is dominated by the Megabus, a system of passenger transport that is carried out with articulated buses of exclusive lanes, not very different from the Transmilenio of Bogotá. The areas not connected by this transport system are served by traditional buses, taxis and mobile apps.

The Circunvalar area, a luxury area in the southeastern part of downtown Pereira, has the highest concentration of accommodation, restaurants, and nightlife. (See accommodation in Pereira).

Here’s a guide with the best areas to stay in Pereira, Colombia.

As is common in many Latin American cities, the center is a busy commercial area during the day, but at night, it is not advisable to walk through its streets, particularly in dark or lonely places.
