Where to stay in Darwin – A guide to the city of North Australia

Darwin is a city located in the north extreme of Australia.

It is the capital of the territory of Northern Australia and the least populated state capital of the entire country.

The city itself is built on a cliff overlooking the harbor.

Darwin is considered one of the main points of entry to Australia from the countries of Southeast Asia, given its proximity to Indonesia. Darwin is closer to Jakarta than to Sydney.

The North Australia region has a tropical climate, with seasons between rainy and dry. It receives a significant amount of precipitation during the rainy season and the area is known for its spectacular atmospheric activity and lightning storms.

The Darwin International Airport is the tenth busiest in the country and is located in the suburb of Marrara, 8 kilometers from the city centre.

The tourist attractions in Darwin mix nature with urban places. The Crocosaurus Cove(or crocodile aquarium) is one of the must-see attractions of the city and is located in the CBD. Other attractions in this city include the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, the Waterfront, the Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks or Katherine Gorge and Edith Falls.

Most urban attractions in Darwin are located in or near the CBD, so they are accessible on foot. For more distant attractions, you must have or rent a car, but you can also book a tour.

If you want to make the most of your stay, the Central Business District or CBD is the best area to stay in Darwin, given its proximity to tourist attractions (See accommodation in Darwin’s CBD).

Here’s a guide with the best areas to stay in Darwin, Australia.

The best areas to stay in Darwin

1. Our favourite area: CBD

The Central Business District or CBD is, as its name suggests, the heart of the city and one of the best areas to stay in Darwin.

The centre of the city of Darwin is known for its wide streets, lush parks, shops and outdoor restaurants.

It is the oldest part of Darwin and includes many of the important institutions and places of the city, such as the Parliament, the House of Government, the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory, the Bicentennial Park and the George Brown Darwin Botanical Gardens.

Although the downtown is one of the most developed areas of Darwin, demographically, it is one of the least densely populated, because its core is mainly commercial and governmental.

Darwin CBD has the largest offer in hotels in the city, from backpacker options to luxury hotels.

3. Larrakeyah

Larrakeyah is a suburb of the city of Darwin, located west of the city, next to the Central Business District.

The southern part of this district is residential and quiet, while the northern area, which is adjacent to Mendil Beach, has a cosmopolitan vibe and plenty of nightlife options.
