Where to Stay in Grand Canary Island: A Guide to the “Miniature Continent”
Gran Canaria is the third-largest island in the Canary archipelago. With the islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Graciosa it makes up the province of Las Palmas. With around five million annual visitors, Gran Canaria is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Spain and is famous for its beaches, rolling dunes, volcanic formations and legendary nightlife. In this post, we will explore the best areas to stay in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands.
Why you should visit Gran Canaria
The island of Gran Canaria is one of the most striking destinations in the Canary Islands. Although it is mainly known for its beaches, Gran Canaria also offers spectacular natural parks, volcanic formations, natural pools and traditional villages. Thanks to its economic and tourist importance, Grand Canary also has excellent infrastructure, making it easy to visit and explore. Find accommodation in Gran Canaria.
Gran Canaria is practically round in shape and has a very mountainous terrain. It is known as the “miniature continent” thanks to its immense diversity of natural landscapes. Broadly speaking, the island’s north is greener and is covered with lush pine and laurel forests. On the other hand, the south of Gran Canaria is arid and offers desert landscapes such as the famous Maspalomas Dunes. These differences are also noticeable along its coast: the central and north shores of the island are more rugged and consist mainly of rocky cliffs, while the coasts in the south are flatter and offer wide sandy areas.
As in most of the other Canary Islands, the main tourist attractions of Gran Canaria are its beaches. With 235 kilometres of coastline and over 80 different beaches, it is no exaggeration to say that this island offers beaches for all tastes. In Gran Canaria, you can find white, black, pebble and rocky beaches, as well as natural pools with crystal clear turquoise waters. Some of the most popular beaches in Gran Canaria are Playa de Mogán, Las Canteras, Amadores, Playa Guayedra, Las Maspalomas, Aguadulce, Güigüí or Sardina del Norte. Find accommodation near the beach in Gran Canaria.
Gran Canaria’s main tourist resorts are located in the south of the island. Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Meloneras y San Agustín offer some of the top-rated hotels and resorts in the islands and the best tourist infrastructure.
On the other hand, the island’s central area offers a more rural and mountainous environment. Here, you’ll find the main natural attractions of Gran Canaria, such as Pilancones Natural Park, Pico de las Nieves, Doramas Rural Park, Tamadaba Natural Park and Caldera de Los Marteles.
The fertile northern region of Gran Canaria is home to most of the island’s population. This area stands out for its beautiful traditional villages with whitewashed houses and winding mountain paths. The northeast end of GC is home to the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the most populated metropolitan area in the archipelago and the main economic, commercial and cultural centre in Gran Canaria. Some of the most important attractions in Las Palmas include Casa de Colón, the Cathedral of Santa Ana, the Canarian Museum and Las Canteras and El Confital beaches. Find accommodation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Gran Canaria is also famous in Spain and the whole world as an incredible nightlife destination. Nightclubs in the tourist city of Playa del Inglés regularly host some of the best DJs on the planet. On the other hand, the neighbouring town of Maspalomas is a world-renowned gay destination. Every year, thousands of LGBTIQ+ travellers from around the world visit this town to enjoy its legendary nightlife.
When to visit Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is also famous for its traditional festivals. The most important popular celebration on the island calendar is undoubtedly the Las Palmas Carnival. This massive event usually takes place in February or March and is considered the second-most important carnival in the archipelago. Keep in mind that while Carnival is probably the most fun time to visit Las Palmas, these celebrations attract thousands of visitors from all over the world and finding a place to stay in Gran Canaria can be a challenge. If you decide to travel to Gran Canaria for Carnivals, we recommend that you book your accommodation well in advance. Find accommodation in Gran Canaria.
Another important celebration to take into account if you visit the south of the island is Maspalomas Pride. The most important gay pride festival in the Canary Islands, and one of the largest in Spain, attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world and is held in May around the Yumbo Centrum shopping centre. Find accommodation around Yumbo Centre.
Gran Canaria’s location, just 150 km off the African coasts, plus the influence of the trade winds and ocean currents, means this Atlantic island enjoys a mild and pleasant climate throughout the year, making it an excellent holiday destination regardless of the season. Average temperatures in Gran Canaria show minimal variation throughout the year and range between 15 and 22 ºC in the winter and 21 and 28 ºC during the summer.
Unlike mainland Spain, the highest tourist season in Gran Canaria takes place between November and March. During the winter months, thousands of tourists from the continent travel to the islands to escape the cold, and hotel and flight rates increase. Another high season in the archipelago runs between June and September, coinciding with the summer holidays in practically all of Europe.
To avoid the crowds and save some money, the best times of the year to visit Gran Canaria are spring (March-May) and fall (September-November). During these months, you can find the best deals on transportation and accommodation, and temperatures are warm enough to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities.
Getting there and around
To fly into Gran Canaria, this island is served by the Gran Canaria Airport (LPA). Located in Bahía de Gando, 19 kilometres south of Las Palmas, this major airport is the busiest in the archipelago. It offers direct regional connections to the other Canary Islands and a wide variety of flights to Spain, continental Europe (especially to airports in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Scandinavia), and Africa.
Like the rest of the islands of the Canary archipelago, Gran Canaria is very well-connected by ferry. Its capital, Las Palmas, has ferry connections with all the islands (except for La Graciosa) and destinations on the peninsula (Cádiz and Huelva). Check ferry routes, schedules and fares in the Canary Islands.
Although Gran Canaria has taxis and an extensive network of buses (locally known as guaguas) connecting the main towns on the island, the best way to get around Gran Canaria and reach all its towns, natural parks, and beaches is by car. You can rent a cheap car in GC here. Another excellent option to get around the island is hiring tours and activities with transportation included.

Agaete is a traditional town in the northwest of the island of Gran Canaria, it is located approximately half an hour from Las Palmas.
Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Gran Canaria, Agaete’s historic centre is renowned for its colonial architecture, whitewashed houses, Canarian balconies and quiet squares surrounded by palm trees. The main attractions in Agaete’s old town include the Iglesia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, the Museo de La Rama and the Botanical Garden.

The Salinas de Agaete, used to be salt mines (hence the name) and now serve as seawater pools suitable for bathing. The Salinas are connected to Puerto de Las Nieves by a hiking trail.
The nearby Valle de Agaete is one of the least known natural areas in Gran Canaria. This beautiful valley stands out for its and vineyards.
