Where to stay in Sofia – A guide to the Bulgarian capital

The capital of Bulgaria is often ignored by visitors, who prefer to head directly to the Black Sea coast or the nearby ski resorts. However, the city of Sofia is a peaceful capital with several hidden treasures to discover.

Surrounded by extensive green areas, Sofia, the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Bulgaria, is located at the foot of the popular ski mountain, Vitosha.

With a history spanning more than seven millennia, Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The National Historical Museum is one of the largest in Eastern Europe. Recent excavation works carried out during the construction of the city’s metro uncovered a hidden wealth of ancient Roman ruins almost 2000 years old, when the city was called ‘Serdica’.

Sofia is not a great metropolis, but a city that is largely modern and youthful, with a large number of churches with domed ceilings, Ottoman mosques and the occasional Soviet monument that makes it an interesting place to enjoy and experience a true Eastern European experience.

Wide cobblestone boulevards, boutiques with charm and a great night scene are some of the features in this city of 1.3 million people.

An extensive transport system made up of metro, trolleys, trams and buses cross this city, so getting around in Sofia is quite simple.

Accommodation in Sofia is also the cheapest in Europe, especially when compared to the great Western capitals. Even the most luxurious resorts on the slopes of Mount Vitosha tend to have low rates.

As for the best areas, the city center offers the best combination of shopping, attractions and nightlife. See hotels in central Sofia.

This is a list of the best areas to stay in Sofia, Bulgaria.

1. Our favourite area: Sofia Centrum (Old Town)

The Centrum district of Sofia is located, as its name suggests, in the center of the city.

It is the oldest part of Sofia and comprises the Roman city of Serdika.

The Centrum area is the best area to stay in Sofia if you are looking to be close to the historical and cultural monuments of the Bulgarian capital and mobilize on foot.

This area is renowned for its museums, such as the Bulgarian National Art Gallery, the National Archaeological Museum or the History Museum of Sofia.

Other attractions in the area include the beautiful Alexander Nevski Cathedral, the old synagogue of the city, the Banya Bashi Mosque or the Ivan Vazov National Theater.

The historic center of Sofia is undoubtedly the best connected area of the city. Lines M1 and M2 connect at the Serdika station, and innumerable tram and bus lines run through the district from north to south and from east to west.

The central station of Sofia offers domestic connections to the whole country and direct international services to cities such as Belgrade, Bucharest, Istanbul, Nis or Thessaloniki.

The area around the station is not the most beautiful in the Bulgarian capital.

However, it is one of the best areas to stay in Sofia thanks to the convenience of having its largest transport hub at hand, especially if you plan to travel around Bulgaria.

Another good news about staying close to the central station is that the accommodations in this area tend to have very cheap prices and their value for money tends to be higher than those in the center.

Although the palace is located within what could be considered the city center, its size and the typical functional and Soviet style of its structure makes this a differentiated area to stay in Sofia.
