Where to Stay in Barranquilla – A Guide to the Great Port on the Colombian Caribbean

Barranquilla is the capital of the department of Atlántico, in the north of Colombia. This city is located on the Magdalena River’s western bank, about 7 kilometers from its mouth in the Caribbean Sea. It is the main economic center of Colombia’s Caribbean Region. In this post, we will explore the best areas to stay in Barranquilla.

Barranquilla is the fourth largest city in Colombia. Its location at the mouth of the most important navigable river in the country made this city one of Colombia’s economic powerhouses during the Industrial Revolution. Barranquilla is also particularly famous for its Carnival celebrations.

Some of the cultural attractions in Barranquilla’s City Center include the Church of San Nicolas de Tolentino, Parque Cultural del Caribe and the avant-garde Catedral Metropolitana María Reina de Barranquilla. See accommodation in Centro Histórico de Barranquilla.

A couple of miles north of the city center lies El Prado, an elegant tree-lined quarter spotted with historic mansions built by the city’s elites in the late 19th and early 20th century. See accommodation in El Prado.

Due to its geographical location, Barranquilla has a tropical dry climate. Barranquilla is an extremely hot city, with an average temperature of 27.4 ° C. From November to early April, the sea breeze partly mitigates the intense heat. For the rest of the year, you can expect maximum temperatures of up to 40ºC.

The city’s Carnival festivities (usually in February or March) bring a unique atmosphere to Barranquilla. During the rest of the year, the city has very few visitors, most of them passing through on their way to Colombia’s main tourist hubs like Cartagena or Santa Marta. However, this overlooked city is the cradle of Colombian coastal culture. It’s full of excellent restaurants, lively bars, and a handful of fascinating museums.

To get to Barranquilla by air, the city is served by the Aeropuerto Internacional Ernesto Cortissoz. Located 12 km from the City Center, this major Colombian airport offers domestic connections to several destinations in Colombia and a handful of international flights to cities in Florida, Panama, and the Netherlands Antilles.

Barranquilla is also well-served by a network of long-distance buses to cities in the Colombian Caribbean and beyond. See bus routes, schedules & fares.

When it comes to moving around the city, Barranquilla has a public transportation system consisting of a rapid bus system called Transmetro and several bus lines. There are taxis and mobile apps available and you can also choose to rent a car during your stay.

The best area to stay in Barranquilla is Alto Prado. This safe, upscale area in the north end of Barranquilla has the best accommodation options, restaurants, shopping centers, and nightlife in the city. See accommodation in Alto Prado.

Other great areas to keep in mind when choosing the best location in Barranquilla for tourists include El Prado, Riomar, and the city’s Centro Histórico.

Not far from Alto Prado is the neighborhood of El Prado, also known as Viejo Prado, a historic area with a unique atmosphere in the city of Barranquilla.

El Prado is located between Carreras 50th and 60th and 53rd and 75th streets, and is considered the first planned urban development project in Colombia.

This neighborhood, to the northwest of the Historic Center, stands out for its houses, gardens and mansions of different styles, commissioned mostly by Italian, German, Jewish and Arab immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century.

The wide avenues in El Prado are bordered by tall trees and were designed in the 1920s by the brothers Karl and Robert Parrish.

Some of El Prado’s large mansions have been transformed into boutique-style hotels.

3. Riomar

Riomar is one of the five localities in which the city of Barranquilla is divided.

This district is located in the north end of the city and includes 25 neighborhoods spanning from the center of the city all the way to the mouth of the Magdalena River and the coast of the Caribbean Sea, hence its name (which can be loosely translated as “Riversea”).

It is a predominantly upper and upper-middle-class neighborhood, with high residential buildings, many of them equipped with a swimming pool.

Among its natural attractions are the Cienaga del Mallorquín and the “Boca de Ceniza”, both at the mouth of the river.

Riomar also hosts several shopping centers, such as the Buenavista mall, one of the most exclusive in the city.

Riomar is a good area to stay in Barranquilla, although it is a bit far from the more central neighborhoods.

4. Centro Histórico

The Historic Center is the birthplace of Barranquilla and where social, commercial, cultural and political life developed from its establishment in the 17th century until the 1980s.

The historical center of Barranquilla is located in the far east-central part of the city, close to the western margin of the Magdalena River. It is comprised between Carreras 35 and 46 and streets 30 and 46.

The historic center of Barranquilla houses a large number of buildings from different periods of Colombian architecture: neoclassical, late Spanish baroque, neocolonial, art nouveau and art deco, as well as many contemporary additions of questionable aesthetic value.

Although the old town of Barranquilla is not as beautiful as that of other Colombian cities, the area concentrates a good selection of cheap accommodation options.

The downside of staying in this area is that Centro Histórico is not the safest neighborhood to stay in Barranquilla. Caution is advised, especially at night.
