Where to stay in Guadalajara – A guide to the capital of Jalisco

Guadalajara is the capital and the most populous city of the state of Jalisco, in the western area of Mexico.

With more than five million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, Guadalajara is the second-most populous city in Mexico.

As the second-largest city in Mexico, Guadalajara has the infrastructure of a large city, but with a less frantic atmosphere than the capital of the country, which makes it an excellent alternative to Mexico City.

In many ways, Guadalajara concentrates the essence of Mexico, and many of the concepts constantly associated with the country originate here. In Jalisco, mariachi music was born, including the typical Mexican hats and the charreadas, among many other popular expressions that condense the character of the folklore of the Aztec country.

The tourist attractions of Guadalajara are multiple. From the architectural point of view, its colonial area (Guadalajara City Center) includes the neoclassical Guadalajara Cathedral, culminated in the 17th century, the Rotunda of the Illustrious Jalisco, or Los Arcos de Guadalajara, the old gateway to the city.

With an attractive cultural life, Guadalajara also has almost 200 public and private exhibition rooms. Among the most interesting museums are the Hospicio Cabañas, the Regional Museum of Guadalajara and the Museum of Arts of the University of Guadalajara.

Guadalajara enjoys a mild/subtropical climate with summer rains of medium humidity and mostly dry winter. The maximum temperatures oscillate around 28ºC throughout the year, although the minimum temperatures are around 5ºC during the months of December and January.

The capital of Jalisco has a metro system (Light Rail). This means of mass transport has 3 lines spread throughout the city.

When we talk about the best areas to stay in Guadalajara, Guadalajara City Center is the most recommended area due to its central location, the proximity of tourist attractions and the ease of traveling by metro to other districts (See accommodation in Guadalajara City Center).
